DTS was contracted by the Colorado Department of Transportation to create a bicycle and scenic byways online mapping application. The Bicycle/Pedestrian/Scenic Byways Section of CDOT is required by statute to provide information to residents and visitors traveling the state (primarily bicyclists) regarding routes and conditions of roads pertinent to their travel. Hard copy maps include information about 25 Scenic and Historic Byways, and those maps also provide shoulder width and traffic volume information which assists bicyclists as they travel around and through the state. CDOT distributes approximately 50,000 maps per year.
With an increasing number of local trails and paths connecting communities, CDOT receives more and more requests to provide additional information on the map. However, CDOT was limited in the amount of information that could be provided due to the space limitations of the printed page. CDOT chose DTS to develop a mobile app that allows for more flexibility to add links and other information. The resulting mobile compatible application provides mapping information to bicyclists and Byway travelers regarding CDOT-managed roadways. Additionally, the application allows local entities to work with CDOT to upload additional transportation information pertinent to their areas (e.g., add local bicycle trails or bus stops) as well as general information such as the availability of hotels, shopping and restaurants on or near the facilities.
